Disgusting Work Ethics

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

I am appalled by the way a colleague responded to the demands of work.

The night shift is finishing in about 15-minutes. The night work was relatively light and easy compared to a regular manic night shift. While everybody milled around the desk preparing for the imminent hand-over, the ambulance turned into the entrance with a patient on a long-board, c-spine collar and head-blocks. As night charge nurse, I approached the ambulance crew with a questioning look and expression of concern. The paramedic picked-up my concern and said that what we see is simply a precaution. A brief hand-over from ambulance crew to me made everything clear. The patient was side-swiped by a slow-moving car. He was found by the crew sitting and moving in the sidewalk where the accident happened. He is not complaining of any pain nor is showing any signs of neurovascular injury or deficit. He is fully alert and conscious. Paramedic crew on-scene assessment found him to be ok but due to the mechanism of injury they are compelled to follow procedure no matter how silly it may be.

I then decided to put the patient in the nearest available acute and high dependency room. I called the room nurses assigned to that room to briefly inform her of the patient’s case. The response I got from her is “Oh please do not put him in that room, it is now almost 7′0 clock! He should be in the trauma room by the looks of it.” She dramatically said this statement while in hearing distance of the patient and his father. I am just so appalled by her reaction. I countered with “We do not have a choice, do we?!”

With that answer, I then immediately called two Emergency Doctors and with the help of the ambulance guys, managed to log-roll and quickly clear the apparent injuries masked by the packaging. Within fifteen-minutes from arriving, the patient was made comfortable, seen and triaged by the AE & Ambulance team and was sent to radiology for precautionary x-rays all without the room nurse getting involved of even saying hello to the patient. What a attitude towards patients and a truly disgusting work ethics.

Dream Segment – Underwater Dragon

A series of seemingly unrelated dreams associated with moderate alcohol consumption after a weekend children’s party.

The scene starts with an endless flatland. The horizon extends far and wide in the distance. The sun is slowly setting and is losing its bright rays. I am with a male friend (again I cannot see his face). We walked the flatland towards the horizon. Another unidentified male appears from our left and instructs us to stop. In the far distance, another male appears. The male nearer to us suddenly jumps into a body of water that appears in front of him. He then reports that the water is too cold and further instructs me and the male in the far distant to wear the dry suit located behind us. We turned around and a dry suit appears in the floor. I started to wear the dry suit assisted by my male friend. The suit is elastic in nature, two-tone colour of dark blue and algae green. I can also see the other male wearing his own suit. After completely wearing and securing the suit, my friend steps back away from me. In a next shifting of scene, I see myself and the other male slowly being surrounded by rising water as we face each other. In time we were completely submerged in water. I did not feel unsafe or suffocated. I am able to completely and freely breathe underwater. We then wore our “boxing” gloves. As we started to inch closer to each other, a huge slow moving dragon started to appear from the far left corner. It moved clockwise around the now clearly visible rectangular encasement that we are in. I looked around and I felt as if we are inside a huge rectangular aquarium. I can see my male friend and other people around us outside the water container and was watching us. They were chanting something I cannot completely understand.

The dragon moved closer and instinctively, I got out of its way onto the side and kept completely still and quiet. The other male did the same. As the dragon moved past us, we received this mental instruction that to be able to get out of this situation, we have to slay the dragon at all costs. I asked how. I then received a thought which says that there is no way to slay the dragon but that it should be left on its own to die in due time. I then started to protest saying that waiting for the dragon to die this way will surely take decades and centuries. I said that surely there should be a way to slay it. Then everything stopped. The dragon then turned into a female human accompanied by about two other people. I then felt that the whole scene is similar to a studio recording. The theatre lights are now visible; the other scene props are now clearly seen. A male then appeared from somewhere and acted like as if he is the director. The dragon turned female then voiced that she agreed with my though about the way the dragon should be killed. She suggested that a sort of a weak spot be located behind the dragon’s head and that should this weak spot be strike by me or the other male, the dragon will perish. The other male suggested that a sort of horn-like extension be attached to this weak spot and that should this horn-like extension be broken, it will instantly kill the dragon. Everybody agree and the whole set was again prepared. At this point, I then saw myself talking to an unidentified male and a female that I can identify as Charo Santos. (?)

The dream then transitioned into another dream segment.

Dream Segment – Roller Coaster Ride

This dream segment follows immediately after the Underwater Dragon segment

The location is in on top of a hill. No evidence of any town or close form of civilization can be seen. On the top of the hill, a roller coaster track can be seen majestically sitting and filling the otherwise magnificent horizon.  The track extends to the nearby top of another lower hill. I was walking along to the tracks in an inspective manner. The tracks went from one hill to another with a 360-degree loop at both hill tops. After walking the tracks twice, I was happy that it is okay. I then returned to the higher hill top where a roller coaster ride-cart is parked. Seating inside the cart is a female waiting for me to set the ride going. I went to a little box by the side of the track and moved a lever-switch which made the cart move. As the cart moved downhill from where I stood, the cart careened off-track as it reached the peak of the other small hill. The cart and female inside were thrown out to the sides.  I then immediately called the ambulance. The ambulance crew appeared immediately from behind the tracks. They were apparently parked just a stone’s throw away from the tracks. The paramedics were two-male who slightly recognized me as they belong to the ambulance company I worked with before. I then interacted with them and asked them about how the company is, how much the pay is, does the company still has the same contractual-projects, etc. They offered answers which satisfied me.

The dream segment blackout.

Dream Segment – Motorcycle

I stood outside a petrol station filling up a high-powered motorcycle. I am accompanied by an unidentified male.   My male friend and I stood close to the motorcycle as the station attendant checked the tire pressures.  While doing so, air leaked out and painfully and coldly hit me and the other male on the knees. We simply moved further away. Finished with the petrol and the air check, my male friend and I prepared to leave the station when Alex appeared from the front with a bag of stuff. I told him that he just got here in time. We then all climbed onto the motorcycle with my male friend driving, Alex behind him and me taking the rear-most seat. We then roared off the station.

Dream Segment – Hand in Face

From the motorcycle segment dream, the next vision is that of me and Alex looking out of the window from a concrete block tower overlooking a massive meadow.  We can see the motorcycle slowly getting smaller and smaller as it moved away from us.  The atmosphere inside the tower room is light and bright. I can clearly see the colour green all around the place. I can feel no threat of danger in any form.

From behind us, a door opened and a male comes in accusing us of being relatives to a certain person. Alex and I ignored him and his slander as we continued to look out of the window and enjoyed the view. The male continued his verbal accusations. I finally got fed up and in annoyance rather than anger, I turned around and grabbed him by his neck and lifted him off the ground and slammed him onto a table in my left.  I then heavily placed my left hand into his right check and into the table surface.  My right knee now supported my body weight while leaning over the table. Alex meanwhile kept looking outside the window. I then told the man I pinned into the table surface that my father is so and so, my mother is so and so, my brothers are so and so, etc., naming all of my family members in the process. In the end I told the man that having said all these names to him, I am therefore not related to the person he is saying I am. The dream then faded-out.

Dream segment – Blog Award from HK

The final segment in this dream series is about a blog award from Hong Kong.

I have been regularly putting information in this blog. In time, the blog received numerous comments and praise. Eventually, I received a comment from a female in HK saying that she particularly like the contents of the blog and as a result have encouraged her friends to read it as well. Blog readership grew and expanded.

I received another comment saying that this blog has won an award in Hong Kong for its uniqueness and contents. The comment came from the female who earlier on encouraged her friends to read the contents. I found out that the female is connected with a group of writers and bloggist in HK.  She even wrote a specific blog about this blog. An exchange of comments and emails soon came into being. I then travelled to HK to finally meet the female who started all this. I arrived in HK and was met by this female who gave me news that another group of writers in HK have further awarded this blog.
